Article #11
Have you ever came across an unusual lump or bump on your dog and wonder what it was? This could be absolutely nothing, or it could be a dog tumor. Now, before running around in an anxious fashion, sit down and relax because this does not necessarily mean that your dog has a few months to live. In fact, most dog tumors are nothing to worry about at all and it is only in very rare occasions that dogs die from tumors.
Roughly 1 out of every 10, 000 dogs will lose their life due to a tumor. This doesn't
mean that you have to stay in the dark about the information as it can be very helpful
to know about dog tumors in order to prevent them from happening and to be able to
spot them as soon as possible.
One of the most common types of dog tumors are found in the mouth. These tumors
are difficult to remove because of the location. As they grow in size they can onto
the gums, the teeth and even the roof of the mouth. This makes it extremely difficult
for a vet to reach the tumor. This type of tumor is also likely to grow rapidly in
size and spread to other areas of the body.
If you notice that your dog has bad breath accompanied with blood coming from its
mouth, you should check for a lump in your dog's mouth. Another common symptom for
mouth tumors in dogs is that their face will often swell up in size and the mouth
might appear to be much larger than it normally is. Dogs that have difficulty swallowing
their food or if they have loose teeth will also indicate that there is a problem.
Paws are what make dogs unique from humans and since they walk around without shoes
you need to take extra good care of their paws. Inspecting them for tumors is important
in order to avoid serious damage.
If your dog happens to have a tumor on its paws, it might not necessarily feel any
pain at all because the paw tumors are normally quite hard to the touch. The bad
thing about paw tumors in dogs is the fact that they are quite difficult to identify
simply by noticing the symptoms. This is because the symptoms involved in this particular
type of tumor are similar to several other diseases as well. For example, a dog that
has a paw tumor might experience vomiting, lethargy and diarrhea with blood. These
symptoms can also be related to such disease as hypothyroidism in dogs. This makes
it vital for you to inspect your dog's paws for lumps every now and again.
Lung cancer is one of the most infamous cancers in the world but most people ignore
the fact that dogs can also contract this disease.
This type of tumor is difficult to spot because it is classified as being an internal tumor. More often than not, this type of tumor will be found somewhere in the respiratory system but since it spread quickly it can rapidly be found in other areas of the body. One of the strongest indicators of lung cancer in dogs is trouble breathing. This could either be rapid breathing or extremely loud breathes.
Weight loss and a high dog temperature such as fevers are other symptoms. Some people
believe that dogs that live in house with lots of cigarette smoke are more at risk
but this has not yet been proven.
The good thing about dog tumors is that they tend
to be more common as external tumors than internal ones making it easier to remove
them if surgery is necessary. In the end, you don't have to worry much about tumors
unless your dog actually gets one because they are very rare to begin with.
